Climbing North America Slides
Hubert A. Allen, Jr.

This small, 16 page all-color book contains copies of the images I use in my North American Slide Show. Meant to be more of a memento than a book, the pages are full of color photographs of climbing in places such as: Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin; Eldorado Canyon State Park, Boulder Colorado; The Needles in South Dakota and winter climbing in the Northeast. Some of my great climbing pals are in these shots.

The Simpson Incident and Other Climbing Misadventures
Hubert A. Allen, Jr.

My newest title, "The Simpson Incident and Other Climbing Misadventures," is my most personal writing.  It deals with my lifelong passion for rock, ice and mountain climbing on three continents.

These are my youthful climbs in America and Canada, my summer in the Alps and a true close encounter with death in Africa.  My account of climbing Les Courtes in the Alps during the summer of 1981 has never been so completely told. Yet, the careful reader will find indirect or direct references to this Incident in six of Joe Simpson's books. Significantly, there is an entire chapter on our Incident in Joe's 1993 autobiography.

There is also an important and useful chapter of results of a study of climbing accidents in Yosemite National Park which I was involved in during the 1980s.  I hope you will give my book a chance.

Thanks.

Shadows on the Wall
Hubert A. Allen, Jr.

Shadows on the Wall is a delightful children’s tale set in Malawi, Africa, in the 1980s. This was the first book I wrote and self-published. The story is essentially the true story of a climb I did with Malawian Cite Taulo, my most trusted friend in Malawi. It was originally written for a children’s book writing competition held in Malawi. The book came in a close second - to the winning entry, “Helen the Hippopotamus” and the author was encouraged by the judges to publish his tale. The judges also understood that it was not just a children’s book but a parable of Malawi.

Shadows on the Wall is the story of two men, one an American and the other a Malawian, climbing the mountains of Malawi with each man finding the strength to overcome the most difficult of climbing obstacles. They have a series of climbing adventures of ever-increasing difficulty, until they tackle the West face of Chambe Peak - a climb of epic proportions.

This book has a map illustrated with miniature images of the actual climbs in Malawi drawn by the famous Malawian painter George Chilinda. This 56 page book was completely produced in Malawi, under the auspices of the Likuni Press. While the author was living in Malawi, this book was a best-seller at the airport bookstore, and in other shops throughout the country. Limited copies remain for sale.
