Shadows on the Wall
By Hubert A. Allen, Jr.
Shadows on the Wall is a delightful children’s tale set in Malawi, Africa, in the 1980s. This was the first book I wrote and self-published. The story is essentially the true story of a climb I did with Malawian Cite Taulo, my most trusted friend in Malawi. It was originally written for a children’s book writing competition held in Malawi. The book came in a close second – to the winning entry, “Helen the Hippopotamus” and the author was encouraged by the judges to publish his tale. The judges also understood that it was not just a children’s book but a parable of Malawi.
Shadows on the Wall is the story of two men, one an American and the other a Malawian, climbing the mountains of Malawi with each man finding the strength to overcome the most difficult of climbing obstacles. They have a series of climbing adventures of ever-increasing difficulty, until they tackle the West face of Chambe Peak – a climb of epic proportions.
This book has a map illustrated with miniature images of the actual climbs in Malawi drawn by the famous Malawian painter George Chilinda. This 56 page book was completely produced in Malawi, under the auspices of the Likuni Press. While the author was living in Malawi, this book was a best-seller at the airport bookstore, and in other shops throughout the country. Limited copies remain for sale.
