My newest title, "The Simpson Incident and Other Climbing
Misadventures," is my most personal writing. It deals with my lifelong
passion for rock, ice and mountain climbing on three continents.
These are my youthful climbs in America and Canada, my summer in the
Alps and a true close encounter with death in Africa. My account of
climbing Les Courtes in the Alps during the summer of 1981 has never
been so completely told. Yet, the careful reader will find indirect or
direct references to this Incident in six of Joe Simpson's books.
Significantly, there is an entire chapter on our Incident in Joe's 1993
autobiography. There is also an important and useful chapter of
results of a study of climbing accidents in Yosemite National Park which
I was involved in during the 1980s. I hope you will give my book a
chance.
